Week 4_Terri_Project Schedule and Estimating Activity Duration

Leading an instructional design project can be overwhelming and a bit chaotic.  With all the phases both project management and instructional design, a training project manager must interweave the two in a cohesive manner to negotiate a successful project execution.

Project Management Principles in Instructional Design provides overview of project management principle based on the PMBOK PM Certification.  This textbook delivers a PMBOK approach to project management and ID with specific details on managing scheduling, resource leveling, and estimating cost.  It is useful as it provides a detailed outline of the project phases from initiation to closeout and the type of activities in each phase. Its helpful as guidance to navigating the tasks required for success project execution.

The eLearning Academy blog on project management is an excellent source for scheduling guidance on project management for eLearning project.  The blog offers video and content insight in the developing a project scope, timelines, and plans for training projects.  The content focuses on defining each task, responsibilities, and milestones.  It has a helpful template available for download and reference to other resource such as an eLearning project plan notebook.

I found both resources helpful as quick references for templates downloads and situational examples as I work through developing my ID project scheduling details.

  1. Thank you for sharing your resources. I enjoyed the project management advice from the eLearning Academy. I like that he offers videos with screen shares and project timelines. I have noticed that there are several different academies that offer assistance to jump start your ID career. This one appears to have good reviews but I still struggle with the idea of spending $999 for the academy. I appreciate that they offer great resources for free. Would you consider the academy? Do you think they are needed to start an ID career? I am conflicted on the next step after the Master's program since most positions want ID experience.

  2. Terri,

Thank you for providing insight into this week’s blog. The resources you provided would be helpful to the Project Manager (PM) if they needed to reference a step in a process or if the PM wanted to look up workplace scenarios. Another benefit of the resources is that they are free to access which will save the PM money if some of the budget was allocated for project organization tools. If the PM needs to do research on tools, they should keep in mind the design of the tool which should make monitoring the project life cycle sufficient, user-friendly and have a feature that shows the duration of project activities & tasks of team members (Longoria, 2021)
