Impact of Technology and Multimedia

Innovations in technology have advanced how multimedia serves online learning environments.  Technology and multimedia are interwoven into the standard infrastructure and is a primary aspect of the course design.  Ideally, the design process would prioritize the pedagogy before the supporting technology; however, the learning experience is incorporated into the early phase (Boettcher & Conrad, 2016).  Multimedia video and audio are used as primary aspects of the learning experience.

For these reasons, it’s important for online instructors to consider which tools will be used during the planning and course preparation.  The instructor must assess the availability and affordability of the selected tool and whether it is user-friendly and easy to learn how to use.

Preparation for training demands a lot of time to ensure readiness before the actual start date.  The key is using the basic tools to maintain consistency and reliability for an extended time.  Using the same tools reduces the prep time and learning curve necessary for new tools, such as attending a workshop or working with technical staff for a tutorial or coaching (Boettcher & Conrad, 2016).

Introducing a new tool at the start of the course will disrupt the course's flow, tone, and momentum (Boettcher & Conrad, 2016). However, new innovations have improved communication tools such as WebEx Instant Messenger, collaboration media, and social networking. If it becomes necessary to introduce a new tool, it is best to do so in the course's early middle or late middle phase.
